Firstly, a week-long gap in my posts is due to the turmoil of the Chennai floods. Though this post was scheduled to be posted in the mid of last week, I didn’t have an interest in doing that after watching videos and talking to people about the disaster to my wonderful city. How ever, Chennai is a city that cannot be shaken by any disasters and people of Chennai had proved it yet again. With all our prayers to those who are affected and those pure-hearted humans who volunteer, we will look forward to this simple dinner/snack menu. It is always ahead of breaking things for many of us on what to make for dinner. Most of our planning for breakfast and lunch goes fine. As we end the day, we lose ideas for what to make for dinner. While the family resists of eating roti and phulka every night for dinner, we are forced to look on for some quick fix, yet satisfying dinner to finish the day. This was one such idea that struck me when I opened my pantry door to look at the Idli Rava packet that was sadly waiting to get my attention. I had earlier used it to make idli and almost forgot to use them. I rendered a helping hand to it today and turned them into Upma Kozhukkatai. If you are one such person like me to choose on dinner ideas, this is definitely going to become a favorite dinner recipe that your family would demand often.

Instructions

0/6 Instructions
  • Heat a pan and add 2 tsp of oil. Once they shimmer, add the ingredients in the "To Temper" table.
  • While they are getting roasted, add one cup of Idli Rava to it and sauté for a minute for the temper items to coat the Idli Rava evenly.
  • Warm water in a saucepan on the other side and add the warm water to the roasted Idli Rava. Add Salt and Hing to it. Cover with a lid and cook for about 5-6 mins.
  • Remove the lid and add grated coconut to the Upma. Switch off the flame and allow it to cool down.
  • Meanwhile, heat an idli pot with water and grease the idli plates. Grease hands with gingelly oil and make round/long shaped kozhukkatai.
  • Arrange them in the greased idli plate and allow it to cook for 3-4 mins. Transfer the kozhukkatai to the serving plate and enjoy it.

Notes

  • We had them as such. You can also accompany it with simple coconut chutney.
  • Instead of Idli rava, you can soak 1 cup of rice, drain water and air dry them for 3 hrs. Make them into Rava in a mixer grinder and then follow the same process to make kozhukattai.
