  • Wash, peel and cut the papaya into chunky cubes. Soak tamarind in water and extract thin juice from it. Boil papaya cubes in tamarind juice along with salt until they become soft. Set it aside.
  • Heat a pan and add cooking oil. Once it is hot, add mustard seeds, fennel seeds to it, and add chopped onions to it. Sautee until they become transparent and add green chili, ginger pieces and curry leaves to it.
  • Add turmeric powder, coriander powder and red chilli powder to it and saute until the raw smell of the powders goes off.
  • Add cooked papaya cubes to it and combine until the masalas coast well. Sprinkle a dash of garam masala powder to it. At this stage add jaggery powder and combine well. Cook the curry in low flame.
  • Meanwhile, dry roast peanuts and grind them to a coarse powder. Add it to the papaya curry and sautee for about 2 mins
  • Switch off the flame. Serve sweet and sour papaya curry with roti/ phulkas.

  • In this recipe, I have used jaggery powder. You can also use honey instead. However, make sure to switch off the flame as soon as you add it to prevent turning hard.
  • We loved having peanuts in this curry with its coarse texture. If you are allergic to nuts, avoid adding peanuts. The curry will be still tasty.
