Barnyard Millet / Kuthirai vali arrisi is one of the positive millet that is a boon to human. Positive millets are those millets that help in curing any health issues or disorders. Hence their consumption is very good for health. The carbohydrate content of this Barnyard millet is low and it is rich in fibre. High fibre foods always tend to make you feel full even with a small quantity. Hence, if you are looking for weight loss diet, do include them frequently.

Barnyard Millet Pongal is a family favorite. We make this at least once in a couple of weeks for our weekend brunch with a chutney and sambar. It is always hit that the kids in house love them too. With a small cup of pongee, we feel full and don’t have to worry about the carbs from pongal. While the regular pongal is rich in carbs, this is just opposite to it. You can eat them without guilt about them. Do try this easy pongal and enjoy its goodness.

  • Dry roast 1/3 cup of moon dal until raw smell goes off. This should take about 4 mins. Set aside.
  • Add one cup of barnyard millet and was them multiple times.
  • In a pressure cooker, add the cleaned millet-dal, along with 3.5 cups of water, turmeric powder, salt and asafoetida powder.
  • Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles until soft. Mash them with a ladle.
  • Heat Ghee in a small pan. Once they turn hot, add jeera seeds, pepper corns, curry leaves and cashews. Roast them until golden brown.
  • Transfer the tempering to the mashed millet-dal and combine them. Serve the hot pongee with chutneys or sambar of your choice.

Notes

  • Barnyard millet needs to be washed multiple times with water before pressure cooking.
  • An equal quantity of ghee and oil can be used to temper the pongal.
  • It is optional to add a slit green chili in this pongal. You can avoid them if you don't like.
