ANGAYA PODI ( Perfect for Postpartum Mothers and Digestion)

Pregnancy is an important phase for every women and recovery after childbirth needs to be done cautiously. In early ages, where medical facilities are less and most childbirth was done at home, the diet that was followed postpartum helped in the healing process. Most of the foods given to new moms included peppercorns against the red and green chilies. Angaya Podi is one of the powder/podi made with turkey berry/sundaikkai, Manathakkali vathal/ Black night shade and dried neem leaves, all of which have ayurvedic properties. This Angaya podi also aids in digestion and is a great remedy for stomach problems. A spoonful of this Angaya podi on hot rice with gingelly oil has great benefits. This podi is meant not only for new moms but for anyone to cleanse the digestive system.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup Dried Neem Flowers
  • 1/4 cup Sundaikkai/ Turkey Berry
  • 1/4 cup Manathakkali Vathal/ Black Night Shade
  • 1 tbsp Coriander Seeds
  • 1/2 stick Dry Ginger
  • 1 tsp Pepper Corns
  • 1 tsp Jeera Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Ajwain/ Omam / Carom Seeds
  • 1 dash Salt
Instructions
  1. Heat a pan and dry roast a quarter cup of dried neem leaves on a medium-low flame. In the same pan, a dry roast a quarter cup of turkey berry and black night with a drizzle of oil. Roast them until they turn brown.
  2. In the same pan, add all the other ingredients . Roast them until they are done.
  3. Allow them to cool down and transfer to a mixer jar. Grind to a fine powder. Add a spoonful of this powder to hot rice and gingelly oil. Serve with any green vegetable poriyal or kootu.
Recipe Notes

  • Roasting all of the ingredients in a medium-low flame is important. If they are cooked in high flame, there are high chances of them getting burnt.
  • In case you do not have all of the ingredients for this podi, proceed with whatever you have.
